Artist’s statement - Earthling One

The figures display composed and reflective postures with a textured unglazed surface and are handmade from Laguna red sculpture clay. They reflect our shared human experience and wisdom. They are fired to 1180degC and fully vitrified so they could be used outdoors to enhance a garden setting.

The totara stands are an important accompaniment to these sculptures, elevating them while reflecting the organic nature of the terracotta figures. (However, the sculptures may be purchased without the wooden stands)

Made as bespoke stands for my sculptures by local artist Russell Evenson, who has topped the timber with beaten copper, the totara tells its own story in the markings cut into the wood for its purpose as fence post strainers. Over one hundred years old, the posts served their time in Central Hawke’s Bay and were sourced from the farm. The totara is a historic relic of our farming past, while the original trees would have been hundreds of years old, dating back to Aotearoa’s pre-European era.
